Information Guide to Business Process Management (BPM)

BPM: Business Activity Monitoring (BAM)

A comprehensive BPM solution should have the ability to continually monitor process operations and activities in real-time and make changes. Such a capability is known as business activity monitoring or BAM. Any BAM system should have a graphical interface that allows users to see the status of a process, the overall workflow, and be able to drill down into historical data provided in a knowledge base to see the who, what, when, where and how long of a process, sub-process or activity.

In this way, automated processes can be continually refined based on knowledge of operational events. In addition, BAM can be used to send event-driven alerts that trigger automatic process adjustments or to alert individuals to intervene manaually. From a strategic planning viewpoint, BAM can provide trending data that can be used to change and improve entire processes.
