Information Guide to Business Process Management (BPM)

BPM: Workflow Automation

In the context of a BPM system, workflow is the automation of a business process during which information or tasks are tracked and transferred from one system, person, or location to another in a specific sequence according to a set of rules. Workflow software enables the automatic routing of data, documents and tasks to the people responsible for working on them in just the right order to support a business process. In this way, users are notified of incoming work and managers can route approvals and monitor status through the organization efficiently.

Workflow software provides a visual representation of the flow of information and work within a process and its associated sub-processes and activities. In addition, workflow software also depicts the sequence of taks, decisions made along the way, the routing paths, and any dependencies or bottlenecks.
